Snafui.com - Unlocking ScanMail Management Console

Problem

Trend ScanMail Management Console on a Microsoft Exchange server crashed and locked me out so I couldn't get back into the console again. The scenario was like this. ScanMail was installed on Server A and Server B. I opened the ScanMail Management Console (SMMC) on Server A. With the SMMC you can connect to another ScanMail server and manage that one too. I had it connect to Server B to manage it. The SMMC crashed, probably due to a configuration error on our part. Attempting to open the SMMC directly from Server B fails with the following message.

ScanMail on this server is currently managed by ScanMail Management Console from computer Server A. You can't manage the same server concurrently from more than one place.

Solution

I found this page to be helpful, it was the only hit I got from Google at the time. It was in Chinese but I managed to get the gist of the fix. Here's what I did:

  1. Open Regedit.
  2. Go down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\ScanMail for Exchange\ConsoleCommand\ManagingConsole.
  3. Change the ComputerName value from "Server A" to blank.
  4. Change the status value from 1 to 0.
